4 out of 5 stars So much lighter than a wheelchair   May 23, 2008

If you need a wheelchair only to be pushed from one place to another, or to move you to the car, this is a wonderful alternative. This transport chair is much lighter than a wheelchair, which makes it a whole lot easier for the person doing the pushing, without sacrificing a bit of comfort for the person doing the riding. Also, the chair does not feel the least bit flimsy, despite the fact that it weighs about half of what a wheelchair might weigh.

The one gotcha is that because it isn't a wheelchair, the person doing the riding cannot use this to move themselves without help. That might not be a problem for most people, but control freaks like myself want the ability to override the person doing the pushing once in a while. Not really, but it would be nice to be able to move the chair even a few inches using my hands.

Like all such folding contraptions, it's essential to bring a seat cushion for all but the shortest journeys. If we take this chair out for the day (i.e., I want to go to the zoo with the family), I bring Obus Forme Gel Seat, which makes the seat very comfortable without adding a whole bunch of weight.

One last thing: a transport chair, whether this one or a wider one, is built for civilized surfaces: smooth pavement or indoor flooring. You will not get very far on dirt, rutted pavement or anything that binds those little wheels. Still, it's a very worthwhile purchase in addition to your wheelchair. (Or instead of a wheelchair if all you need is a ride over long distances, and cannot push yourself)
