Product Description
A Clear and Effective Approach to Learning DBT Skills

First developed for treating borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has proven effective as treatment for a range of other mental health problems, especially for those characterized by overwhelming emotions. Research shows that DBT can improve your ability to handle distress without losing control and acting destructively. In order to make use of these techniques, you need to build skills in four key areas--distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

This book, a collaborative effort from three esteemed authors, offers straightforward, step-by-step exercises for learning these concepts and putting them to work for real and lasting change. Start by working on the introductory exercises and, after making progress, move on to the advanced-skills chapters. Whether you are a professional or a general reader, whether you use this book to support work done in therapy or as the basis for self-help, you'll benefit from this clear and practical guide to better managing your emotions.

The individual struggling with overwhelming emotions and DBT therapists will benefit significantly from this workbook. McKay, Wood and Brantley have expanded and translated DBT Skills, making Linehan's iconic work on emotional skill building even more accessible and easy to apply to everyday life.
--Kate Northcott, MA, MFT, is a DBT therapist in private practice with Mindfulness Therapy Associates and is director of New Perspectives Center for Counseling, a non-profit counseling center, in San Francisco, CA

1 out of 5 stars For BPD only   July 16, 2010

While this workbook's title and statement do not claim as much and in fact imply otherwise, this workbook is for people with Borderline Personality Disorder. It is not for anyone who desires to apply these skills to other disorders such as depression and anxiety. All of the examples of application in this book are of BPD patients and their thought processes. Look elsewhere for workbooks that apply DBT to other disorders.

I bought this book for my daughter, who has Borderline Personality Disorder, to use as a tool for practicing her coping skills. The program she had just gone through didn't even have this, or suggest it to her. She works with it every couple days, and it helps her get through some rough patches. People with Borderline have a very specific set of needs, fears, and issues. I won't go into it here, but suffice it to say that I am grateful Amazon carried this manual, as well as others on BPD and DBT, which I also bought.
As usual, purchase was quick, relatively easy, and merchandise was delivered in a timely manner.
Thank you, Amazon.

As a therapist, I use this a lot. Originally it was created for treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder. I think those skills are useful to everyone, whether we have challenges in our life, or we just want to improve our coping skills and quality of life.

3 out of 5 stars use in groups   April 9, 2010

I use this book in groupwork with adolescents with mental health problems in an inpatient setting. I find that the examples are frequently too grown-up for the teenagers to identify with, and I find it hard to keep them motivated to keep to task in the groups.
I love the layout of the book, and frequently am excited by the content of a chapter prior to a group, only to find that the young people become bored and resistant in the face of unfamiliar examples. more transferrable examples and dilemmas please!!
