Product Description

"It was more than that I had kissed away my twenties and was miserable. I couldn't be naked with anybody, couldn't wear a backless dress, couldn't go to the beach—all the things a person should be able to do."

hen Muhammad Ali's daughter Khaliah hit 325 pounds, she didn't need to be told again that she was morbidly obese. A lifetime of dieting, of starving, had not helped. She thought about gastric bypass surgery but couldn't pursue it after reading the statistic that as many as one in twenty-five people suffers complications, and sometimes death, from the operation. She could not afford to risk leaving her young son without a mother.

Miserable, depressed, and unable to walk up a flight of stairs without losing her breath, she did not know which way to turn—until a friend pointed her toward a new type of surgery called gastric banding. It is just as effective as gastric bypass with a fraction of potential complications. With the band placed around her stomach and completely taking away her hunger, Khaliah slimmed down to half her former size.

The band she used has been the surgical option of choice in Europe for more than a decade but is only just now arriving in the United States. It is sure to become number one here too. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding is reversible, is completely safe during pregnancy, involves no nutritional deficiencies, and best of all, takes away hunger forever, not just for the first year or so.

Khaliah wraps her story of weight loss in this memoir of what it was like to grow up the daughter of one of the world's most famous men, and teams up with her surgeons at the New York University Medical Center to detail the lifetime of misery suffered by an obese girl; the ins and outs of the banding operation; and the joy, serenity, and health resulting from a solution that until now had eluded her.

3 out of 5 stars Not terribly impressed   November 20, 2008
I bought the book to find out more about lap band. I thought the book was a boring read. Ali discuess more of her psych issue relating to being overweight, which I wanted a book that was about life after the surgery. I wouldnt buy if I knew now but if you can get the book under $[...] it would be worth your time to browse through it.

Book Review: Fighting Weight: How I Achieved Healthy Weight Loss With Banding by Khaliah Ali, George Fielding,Christine Ren, Lawrence Lindner

Khaliah Ali's book, Fighting Weight showcases her debut about her life and struggle with weight loss. After years of worrying about her morbidity, the author underwent gastric banding. Dr. George Fielding, of the New York University School of Medicine developed the technique that is used today for band implantation.

Fighting Weight states the benefits of gastric banding to be:

Removable--the band is simply placed around the stomach and periodically tightened, and may be withdrawn if necessary.

Lower Risk--associated with gastric banding than a gastric bypass. 1 in 2,000 versus the bypass's 1 in 200.

Lower Rules--pre-op weight loss and psychological evaluation are "less stringent" because the surgery is safer.

Patient Follow-Up--you'll see the doctor more often because the band will need to be tightened periodically. (Ms. Ali states that this is performed without anesthesia as an outpatient.)

No Hunger--the band tightening keeps the hunger away. The stomach will not stretch out as it may with the gastric bypass.

Dumping--there is no blood sugar drop after eating a little sugar as appears after a gastric bypass. (no sweats or nausea)

Nutritional Deficiencies--a multivitamin is recommended after banding. A gastric bypass patient will take supplements for his lifetime.

Pregnancy--the band is loosened and considered safe.

Surgery--less than an hour, back home after one day in the hospital; 1 of 5 weight-loss operations in the USA is a banding procedure. It's been utilized in Europe since the 1990's and was approved for the USA in 2001.

For those unaware of this type of weight loss, there is a comparison of it with the gastric bypass, offering the banding alternative. The procedure is thoroughly explained and includes of course Khaliah Ali's patient viewpoint.

I didn't really care about her experiences with her father. I just wanted to know about her experiences with lap band surgery. I should have just bought the second half of the book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone considering lap-band surgery   April 21, 2008
This book was suggested to me by a member at a bariatric surgery meeting I attended who had the lapband surgery. This book gives a personal account of someone who had a successful lapband surgery. It also gives information provided by the writer's doctors which is very helpful and useful. Highly recommended for anyone considering lapband surgery. I had lapband surgery in May 2008 and have lost over 40 pounds. This book really gives a step-by-step account on what issues come up and how to deal with them. I highly recommend this to anyone who has weight to lose and are considering lapband surgery.

4 out of 5 stars a must read for anyone hesitating to have the lapband surgery   March 23, 2008

This book was recommended to me after I had my surgery. Since I had done a lot of research prior to the event, the book was just a good read for me.
However, I feel that Ms. Ali wrote a very informative book and managed to keep it entertaining. Had I the opportunity to have read it before my proceedure, I think that it would have eased some of my fears. I saw Ms. Ali on Dancing With The Stars, and after reading this book, I must admit that I would have never thought she had a problem at one time with weight.
I have since passed the book on to another lapband candidate.
