Product Description
Shakti is the Sanskrit term for the feminine energy of the Divine. Yogini is created for, and by, women, and all who have a passion for yoga as a path and a way of life. There is no other yoga book which addresses women’s issues and concerns; while 90% of yoga students are women, the majority of yoga leaders have been men. Yogini traces the rise of women teachers in modern yoga and offers women stories and ideas for what can be done off the mat to integrate yoga practice into daily life. Here is an inspirational guide for the modern yogini offering a fresh perspective for everyone’s yoga or spiritual practice. The candid photos and personal stories of intention, intuition and devotion of many of today’s leading yoga teachers; Angela Farmer, Nischala Joy, Sarah Powers, Shiva Rae, Donna Farhi, Anna Forest, Rama Jyoti Vernon, and Tenzin Palmo. Contributing essayist Linda Sparrowe is the author of many bestselling yoga titles and is the former managing editor of Yoga Journal

disappointed February 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a disappointment. Many more eloquent writers could have done much better with this exciting idea. The style of this book made each story feel like a cliff note. Incomplete. It cheapened and took away from these lovely women that were the subject of this book. The author might do best sticking to writing articles and leave writing books to someone that is able to develop and cultivate each story. I'm sorry to have paid such a price for this magazine! Yogini, The Power of Women in Yoga November 7, 2007 I highly recommend Janice Gate's book Yogini, The Power of Women in Yoga. It is a beautiful, well written, inspirational collection of some of the brightest lights of women yoga teachers. Bridget Beck, Advanced Rolfer
A gem September 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I cannot say enough about this book. With so many disappointing yoga books out there, this one has really surpassed my expectations. I love the history about women in yoga, and I adore all of the personal commentary from female yoga teachers. Because this book doesn't subscribe to a style, it is refreshing, informational, and inspiring. This book has inspired me to address more of women's issues in my own teaching, and to really open up the idea that truth and value is found inside, while so many women are still seeking validation from outside sources. If you're expecting a book about poses: this is not it. This book addresses the emotional and spiritual needs of todays modern yogini. A true, true gem for women looking to honor themselves and grow their personal practice on a spiritual and emotional level.
Refreshing February 6, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
As a yogini I find it refreshing, to learn about the experiences of other women who travel the same path. This read gave me a motivational boost.
Inspiring December 28, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not only does this book tell a fascinating history of women in Yoga, each profile offers insightful wisdom from women who have chosen the road less travelled and lived to tell their tale. I was especially inspired by the Luminaries section which profiles the early pioneering women in yoga. A must read for all yoginis!
