4 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Dealing With Depression   May 18, 2006

In my opinion, Minirth and Meier have written a helpful book on helping people deal with depression. While the authors certainly allow for heredity and other factors as causes of depression, the main focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life.

The book is divided into 3 major sections:

1. WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
2. WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?
3. HOW CAN ONE OVERCOME DEPRESSION?

I particularly enjoyed reading the last section as it is full of practical suggestions for dealing with and overcoming depression. Although I do not consider myself as someone who struggles with depression, I found the book to be full of practical suggestions to keep me from approaching the brink of depression.

Again, the authors' focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life rather than to just let circumstances dictate one's response and approach to life.

While not probably the final authority on depression, the book is still a helpful aid to fighting depression. While the authors are Christians, anyone, non-Christians included, will benefit from the suggestions.

Read and enjoy. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Resource for Depression   May 10, 2006
There is more than one cause for depression, and in the case of chemical depression the need for medication is necessary - along with council of your doctor. That said...

For more than 20 years, I have used this book at different phases of my life. Sometimes my struggles with depression were due to job loss, stress, disappointments or at the end of serious dating relationships. I have given this book to a number of persons who found it as helpful as I did. In my mid 30's this book was instrumental as a milestone, life changing event. It transformed me from being a victim of circumstance, to overcoming it.

I agree with another reviewer in that the material is not for everyone - I feel it is a Christian book and others may not find this to their preference.

1 out of 5 stars A thoughtful yet lacking self help book   September 8, 2001

Time and time again authors attempt to lead readers to health and hapiness through proselytization. Though thoughtfully worded at times one must realize that hapiness depends upon one's self and one's self image rather than from external sources.

1 out of 5 stars Audio book is really radio show segments.   March 5, 2001

This is a review of the audio tape edition, not the book. The audio tape is not an abridgement of the book. The audio tape is a collection of radio appearances by the authors. If you read the box, you'd see that. But the description on-line does not make that clear. I think giving the radio show transcripts the same title as the book is deceptive. The presentation is rambling because they just respond to caller questions. They emphasize the relation between depression and a chemical called ceratonen (seratonen?). This tape is not worth getting.
