Not wanting to spend the kind of money it costs to buy a high quality fetal doppler (we may consider renting later on), I looked for other options to hear our baby's heart and movements. My wife was 24 weeks at the time and we partly wanted to satisfy our curiosity and partly gain reassurance that our daughter is healthy. Having read negative reviews of the Bebe Sounds type monitors, I stumbled upon a few medical equipment retailers and heard some positive feedback. I used Froogle to find the cheapest supplier and hey presto here I am. The main downside of buying this kind of device is the lack of instructions. Medical students have plenty of trained professionals to guide them. We have a funny thing with metal and rubber tubes and a bump - go knock yourself out! I'm still working out how to find the heartbeat reliably but have had some success. It looks daft and feels silly but resting your forehead on the pad at the end of the stethoscope makes a big difference. Firstly, the sound vibrations travel to your ears more efficiently and secondly you can take your hands off the stethoscope. Every time you touch or even hold any part of the scope you'll hear more you than fetus. I find it useful to listen to my own heart first then listen for the faint beat of the fetus going twice as fast. It certainly takes patience to use this thing but I'd say the results are worth while. As well as hearing her faint heartbeat you'll hear the gurgling, moving and kicking all the more vividly. Make sure you choose a quiet time and place since, as mentioned earlier, the beat is extremely faint. Best tip is to cut the hose shorter - with less distance to travel the sound will be much clearer. Finally, it's probably for a good reason but I find the ear pieces so tight they can be quite uncomfortable. It's worth it all when you do hear your future child's heart though. In summary, for what they are (a cheap tool to hear your fetus) I'd say they were worth the purchase. Just remember to be patient, as the fetus grows the heart will become much easier to hear.

As a childbirth educator, I use this fetoscope in my classes to teach moms and dads how to listen for the fetal heartbeat. It takes some practice, but this model works just as well as any other inexpensive model I have tried. Listening for the fetal heartbeat is more a matter of learning to feel the vibration than actually hearing the sounds, which is why using the headrest improves your ability to hear. Also, you can cut the tubing to shorten it, and this improves the sound as well. The less distance the sound has to travel, the louder it will be. For non-diagnostic use, this piece of equipment is adequate.
