Great quick-folding walker September 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for my 92-year old father who was, until a few months ago, walking very well. After his TIA/stroke, however, and with medications that make him a little unsteady, his gait is more of a shuffle. He already fell once and got a black eye (looked like Phantom of the Opera). He doesn't think he needs any assistance most of the time but he does walk much faster and steadier with the Airgo. When we take him for outings, the Airgo is the best thing in the world. He can get exercise as long as he wants, but when he gets tired, the seat is right there. After you get the hang of the folding, it's very quick. And my father got the hang of the hand brakes, even though he is sometimes flummoxed by an apparatus. The other reviewer suggested a basket which would be a good idea. My father and I found the back fabric support not very comfortable. You have to scooch your rear back quite aways for the back to hold you and it doesn't feel really supportive enough. For short rides, however, it is adequate. All in all a very good design.
Great idea, a few flaws July 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I invented this product in my head, after dealing with my Mom's declining ability to walk. We used a borrowed wheelchair for awhile, but she can still walk some, and had a kind of pride issue with the wheelchair. When I tried to push her in her walker, her legs cramped from holding them up, and not much fun looking backwards into my stomach.
So I thought--why can't the back of this thing rotate so I could push her going forward, even if I had to weld a bar on for her feet. I was looking for a small wheelchair when I spotted my idea made real. I ordered it immediately!! Now that it's here, I have two complaints.
1. There is no basket, only a pouch beneath the seat. This makes things difficult for shopping, since you can hardly hide your purchases without getting run off to jail. Besides, the pouch is not large. I fixed this problem by clipping on a basket from another walker. I can move it from front to back with the clips. But it could have been easier if a moveable basket had been designed in so it would have just sat on the walker in either direction (with a protrusion that it just fits over, like all the others).
2. The footrests have to be removed. It's very easy to do, but they have to go into the pouch. This means I have to get my Mom up to get them, and she's usually beat when she wants to sit down. I want them to fold under the unit, or better yet, I would like something simpler, but permanent, like a bar. I stretched a bungee cord between the back wheels, so that when we are shopping, I can still push her backwards when necessary. Her feet can rest on the cord, and won't drag. Then we won't have to move the basket for short distances in stores. For long walks, though, we still need real feet. I'm too lazy to remove the feet, but gee, my Mom HATES the fact that the feet stick out when she's pushing it (but my basket addition hides them somewhat). I sure wish they folded. This company has folding down to a science, believe me.
Speed of transformation is of the upmost importance, because when a senior gets tired it happens fast. And, the number of times they change from walking to needing a push can be surprising.
But all in all, this is a very VERY impressive little unit and well made. Folds to nearly nothing, and quickly. Now we can take long walks, which I need, and she can do as much walking as she is capable of. I like it! And most important (to her), she doesn't look like "an old lady who needs a wheelchair", most of the time.
