Amazon.com Review
Designed by engineering guru James Dyson, inventor of the cyclonic vacuum, the 12-amp Dyson DC07 upright is an inspired combination of power and structural smarts. At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allergens. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine. Furthermore, Dyson upright vacuums are the first and only vacuums certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation.

Suitable for bare floors and carpets, the Dyson upright features a 14-inch cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles. A simple foot pedal switches off the brush roll for bare floors, and the nozzle automatically adjusts for changes in carpet height. The vacuum is equipped for above-floor cleaning with a cleverly stowed, quick-release 17-foot hose with a reversible, extension-wand handle. Onboard accessories include a crevice tool, a dusting brush, and an upholstery attachment, all designed to function without "sticking" to surfaces. Made from the same material used in crash helmets, the vacuum is unquestionably durable. Plus, the design only puts 4 pounds of weight on the handle, so pushing and turning is easy. This model comes with a 35-foot power cord and a five -year warranty. --Emily Bedard

1 out of 5 stars Not sturdy, looses suction after first year   December 31, 2008
I have had my Dyson DC07 for about 4 years now. Unfortunately it HAS lost suction, in fact it did so several years ago. Once the canister is about 1/3 of the way full it will stop spinning and almost all suction is gone. At this point it is necessary to empty the canister, and suction will return. Be careful when emptying it, though. Apparently the plastic "trapdoor base" is quite flimsily attached and the plastic may wear out and break after several years of use as mine did. I now have to spend $50 to replace that one silly piece of plastic. Instead I think I may throw the hunk of junk in the garbage and get a better vacuum.

1 out of 5 stars Dyson does lose suction!   December 30, 2008
My husband bought our Dyson Cyclone from Sears in July and, after two weeks of spare use, it lost suction. We took it to Sears to figure out the problem, which, supposedly, was that the vacuum needed cleaning. We waited 2 weeks only to be returned a non-functioning vacuum. We brough it back and, after another 3 weeks or so, we were returned a still non-functioning vacuum. I am very frustrated, and have been doing research online to figure out why the vacuum that(supposedly)never loses suction did. What a waste of money! If you can help it, buy a canister vacuum with bags. I don't know why we are supposed to go bagless... Good luck!

2 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC... briefly...   December 21, 2008
Like most people who have Dysons, we drank the kool-aid. After fighting for years with our Hoover with its ever-clogging HEPA garbage on it, we just wanted a simple machine that would suck up the dirt and dust.

The Dyson worked like a dream at first. We loved the light weight, easy empty bin, and the very long, real rubber, extension hose (most of the makers now give you cheap, hard plastic hoses).

After only a few uses, it cut out one day while vaccuuming. The customer service department (VERY pleasant to deal with BTW) directed us to remove the bin and tap out the finer dust from inside the turbines.

This indeed was part of the problem. A small amount of dust build-up would cause the machine to trigger a cut-off. Over about a year, our vaccuum time between shut-offs became shorter and shorter until no amount of tapping would give us more than 2 minutes of vaccuum time.

Repair shops in Seattle don't even want to look at a Dyson, so we started toying with the (to us) radical, but optimistic concept that some alternative to Dyson might exist in the world. Our first thought was to buy an antique machine. Heck, I don't remember my mom ever having these kinds of issues! The only thing we were certain of is that we could not trust the crap peddled at the box stores.

I remembered driving by a little Vacuum cleaner shop in Sodo, and with a little work, we found it again. I never heard of most of the vaccuums he sold, but just looking at them, you could tell they were different. They felt solid in your hands, and hummed with authority like finely tuned sports cars, when you flipped the switches.

Our new vaccuum is a Prestige Evolution (Who ever heard of THAT?), and it works superbly (almost 2 years now). It never shuts down, never clogs, does both floors and carpets, power adjustable, and sucks up everything it's supposed to. I do miss the long extension hose on my old Dyson, but when I do stairs, I get by with a rubber extension hose that the shop owner included. Best thing yet, when something goes wrong, I simply have to contact the shop owner (a real LIVE person) and get it fixed!

Lesson learned. For some products, nothing beats good old fashioned service!

3 out of 5 stars Suction is AMAZING- quality leaves something to be desired.   December 11, 2008
I purchased my Dyson two weeks ago and was AMAZED the first time I used it. It replaced a very dependable 8 year old Hoover that was no longer able to suck things up but was starting to leave little balls of cat fur or carpet fiber that I had to get the wand out to pick up. I could not believe how much the Dyson picked up. Also we have navy felt on our pool table and a yellow cat that will sleep there every time we leave the cover off. The Hoover couldn't get all the hair off the felt, one swipe with the Dyson and it looked like new!
However, just two weeks into blissfull ownership my Dyson quit working. I would turn it on and the second I took my finger off the button it quit. It worked if I stayed hunched over and held the button down. I knew this was probably something major but called the Dyson help line anyway. I was told it was a power button failure, and from the way she talked this is a pretty common problem. In order to keep the warranty in place you have to use an approved center and the nearest one to me is in an area of the city I don't feel safe going. Maybe there are more centers in other cities but not around where I live. Thankfully I still had my receipt and Target exchanged it for me with no problems. So I would offer this bit of advice, buy it from a local store and know their exchange policy.
As others have said the vacuum is also awkward to carry and I miss the carry handle my Hoover had, on this I'm not quite sure where to put my hands. My other huge complaint is the attachment hose. On my old vacuum when I needed to switch to the attachment it just slipped out, I used it and popped it back in place. With the Dyson I have to turn off the machine and deal with pulling the hose out, turning it around and fitting it back into place which is quite a hassle and waste of time.
All in all the suction power of this vacuum is wonderful and that's the only reason I'd recommend. I'd give it 5 stars on the performance but only 1 for quality. I'm worried the new one will also break down. They do offer a good warranty but you'll still have to be without a vacuum for a few weeks while its fixed.

2 out of 5 stars While it works, it's great   November 17, 2008
First of all I should say I don't have a houseful of carpet, only a few rugs, so I thought this vacuum would last many years. I heard so many good things about Dyson and when my old Windtunnel finally bit the dust I broke down and bought a Dyson.
I bought this vacuum on Oct. 26, 2008 and on Nov. 16 the plastic that holds the beater bar broke. I returned it to the store that I purchased it and received another. After putting that one together and turning it on I quickly discovered it made a horrible noise whenever it tried to pick up dirt. So back to the store I went where I requested my money back. The bloom is now off the iconic Dyson brand.
In the three weeks that it did work, it worked great. Great sucking power, easy to assemble, quiter than others, but for $400.00 I expect something to last longer than 3 weeks and to be made out of better materials than thin plastic. I looked at the other Dyson brands and all of them have the same thin piece of plastic holding the beater bar together. It was only used on a few area rugs, not an entire houseful of carpeting. I ended up with another brand at half the cost of a Dyson.
