5 out of 5 stars It's cool   September 15, 2008

I will seldom take the time to write a review however, this is such a cool little machine I feel obligated. The company who designed this took the time to address a lot of details so I can take a minute to describe how I like it.

I took the unit into my Drs. Office to verify the accuracy . . . right on! The fact that it records my history of tests available to upload to my computer is great. I take the chart into my Dr. and he can make informed decisions instead of guesswork.

I was so impressed with this gizmo that I purchased 2 other Omron products a week later (with Amazon's handy suggestions of course).

3 out of 5 stars Omron 711   September 11, 2008

On the whole OMRON 711 has very good features. When you take readings, consistency within a short duration is what I would like to see. I have not seen this consistency with this instrument. However, this is what I have heard in general about all blood pressure monitors.

4 out of 5 stars Overall...a good value   September 11, 2008

I bought this unit after looking at units at Costco, WalMart and Sam's. I saved about $15 buying this unit from Amazon. It appears to be a solid unit and is reading slightly higher than at my doctor's office. It is easier to put on by yourself then competitor's models. I haven't tried the software yet, so I can't respond to that. It keeps two people's readings for up 200 readings. It also show's the average. I would recommend this unit.

4 out of 5 stars Meter: 5 stars - Software: 3 stars   September 10, 2008

I have been using this meter for a couple of weeks. Easy to use and read. Everything you want in a meter. If you're like me, you purchased this model for the computer interface. Well, the software is easy to use - that's the only good thing about it. It looks like it was designed by an 8th grader, is clunky, has minimal features, and is buggy. Absolutely no help is available on the Omron site, no support options, no contact number or form for support.

The worst bug in the software - you can't enter data manually - and this is supposed to be one of the software's main features. The input screen won't accept a date - period. Try any date format you want, with or without spaces, dashes, slashes - nothing works. So previous readings you may have taken manually or in a different meter can't be integrated into the data. In my case this is several months worth. There's no option to import data - just export.

The software can't be maximized - it's one of those annoying pre-set window sizes. Since my screen resolution is 1280x1024, text is almost too small to read. If you have eye problems, you will have difficulty reading some of the prompts and buttons.

No help file: all the help is in a PDF file - the help button only returns an error that there's no help. So if you're in the software and need help, you're out of luck. You have to use the pitifully inadequate pfd help file, This "help" is 30 pages, and probably 80% screen captures - little context.

Transferring data: easy and fully automatic. Attach the USB cable, and select "transfer data" - that's it.

Everything is included: batteries, case, USB cable, cuff, meter, software, manual.

Bottom line, great meter, poorly thought out, awfully designed, and buggy software.

Followup: It turns out that the software can't import the files it exports. I switched PC's and had to merge two data files. Omron's instructions are to create a CSV file, then import it into the new install. Omron's software can't read the CSV file it creates!!!

I complained to customer service (it took a while to find contact information.) The reply? It's my anti virus software blocking the install, and to reinstall the software, or I have a defective PC.

What?! Talk about passing the buck. I explained that I tried this on several computers, and all had the identical problem - and that third party programs had no problem reading the file. The problem is buggy software.

Omron: No, I have a defective PC.

Bottom line: The software is next to useless, frustrating to use, and one of the WORST apps I have ever had the displeasure to use. Had I knows this before purchasing the meter, I would NOT have done so. I would have used a different manufacturer.

4 out of 5 stars Superior unit, but software just average   September 8, 2008

This unit works great - no problems at all with the hardware. However, the software is a little amateurish. The software does work "ok", but is feature-weak and lacks robustness. The mediocre software is the ONLY reason I did not rate this product with 5 stars. The unit itself appears to be top-notch, reliable, and produces consistent results. I am absolutely thrilled with the purchase, and can tolerate the software for the meantime. The software is better than having none, but it would be nice if they would put out an "upgrade" for the software so the entire package would be first class. And yes I did go to the website and download the most recent software version 1.3, but I can't even resize a graph, for example. I'm stuck with what their developer thinks is a proper size.
