Waking" A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence February 23, 2008 Incredible story. So sad and yet the dominant feeling is truly one of transcendence and the inner strength of Matt and his family. It certainly puts life in perspective and insires us to focus on the wholeness of our lives as he does, not what we sometimes perceive as lacking. It's a quick read and one that every yoga student should read.
Waking Is Worth Reading January 20, 2008 Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence is a life story that makes demands on the reader not unlike a yoga or rehabilitation stretch. Just when you think that it is too much to bear, there is a moment of breakthrough, of grace, that makes it possible to perverere. I devoured this book in less than a day because of its style and conviction--and because the therapeutic presence of Matthew Sanford on the page is palpable. Waking will resonate with readers who have sustained a physical loss, who have been traumatized, and/or who are open to the possibility of a different type of healing. I also believe it could help health care workers understand from the inside-out what it is like to live in a body altered by the unexpected. I found this book by accident while googling the phrase "trauma and transcendence." The subtitle precisely sums up the book's theme. My only complaint is its brevity (241 pages). It could have easily been double that length, sharing greater details of Sanford's life with paralysis and the yoga practice that echoes his own deep well of wisdom and courage.
Great Read and Great Inspiration December 8, 2007 You'll find this book hard to put down. Matthew Sanford's memoir of how he recovered and healed from a traumatic family auto accident is inspiring. He looks back with great insights into how he felt in the days following the event. And he shows us all how to step out of our bodies to a higher level of consciousness.
For anyone who lives in a body October 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When my husband, a stroke survivor, ordered this book I did not read it immediately. I failed to understand it's relevance to MY life. Matthew Sanford has tapped into yogic wisdom in a deeply personal way, and although his story is of loss and reawakening through spinal chord injury, his message has value to anyone who lives in a body (or would like to). Aside from the wisdom he offers, Matthew is a clear and compelling storyteller with a powerful mastery of writing. I read this book in two sittings because I could not tear myself away from it. Highly recommended for everyone over age 14.
Wonderful September 29, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This heart wrenching account helped me reconnect with the meaning of being in a body. I want to read it again already. I am a novice yoga teacher with 200 hour certification. I learned a lot about how we ignore our bodies, acting as though we don't really need them, and simultaneously thinking that we are our bodies, contradictory ideas that are both incorrect. A body is the interface between one's consciousness and the world of form in which one operates. Loving and listening to it make you more aware of oneness with everything.
