CLEAR AND SMART!!!! July 29, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Having taught SAT preparatory courses myself, l was so glad to find this book. Mr. Schrefer has finally given us a clear guide that is free of the useless hype and silliness that plagues so many other guides and courses. Schrefer shows the SAT test for what it is, an exam that every student can do well on if given the proper preparation and reassurance.
CONGRATULATIONS, MR. SCHREFER ON FINALLY GIVING STUDENTS A SUCCINCTLY WRITTEN GUIDE THAT CUTS THROUGH THE SUPPOSED "MYSTERY" OF THIS EXAM.
High school students, this is a guide that you'll give you what you need to get that great score. Parents, this is a book that will make at least one part of the college process a lot easier on everyone!
FINALLY!! July 29, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Thank God for Eliot Schrefer! A concise, student-friendly, INTELLIGENT approach to a test considered far more daunting than it truly is! Schrefer offers the type of reassurance only an excellent teacher can provide. STUDENTS TAKE NOTICE: This book has what you need to get a great score. SAT BEWARE: you have been HACKED!
wish i'd seen this before paying for a private tutor! July 24, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, my friend turned me on to this book after my parents blew a couple grand (at least) on a high priced SAT tutor. The information in this book was not only as accurate as that given by my tutor, but also was much easier to understand. The study tips really helped to build my confidence and were easy to remember. I would honestly recommend anyone thinking of paying a private tutor for help beating the system look at this book first - it's awesome!
The Most Helpful SAT Prep Book- Outstanding July 23, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I gave a copy of this book to my niece, and after hearing her feedback, I now plan to give a copy to all the teenagers I know taking the SAT. The author's skill at unpacking difficult concepts and his obvious understanding of his audience are clear throughout. Hack the SAT is funny and readable, packing the essential information into a very digestible format. I've looked through many guides, and this one has information you really can't find elsewhere (unless you can afford a high priced private tutor). Highly recommended!!!
Errors and Omissions July 22, 2008 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
First of all the PSAT is not a "free practice SAT" (page 24); it costs $13.00; just check the College Board. Incomplete info about the National Merit Scholarships as well. Critical reading tips are good, but the section on grammar and vocabulary or so simplified that they are useless. Page 187 top rule ignors either/or or neither/nor construction. And the rule at the bottom of the page is a pronoun/antecedent rule as is another strangely worded something on page 191. And these are just for starters. State the rules in language that students know from school - not some attempt to be cool but very confusing. The glossary section does not give the part of speech nor use the word in a sentence. Also not mentioned is the SAT's tendency to use secondary definitions for common words like pedestrian which means common or ordinary. Overall the book is a huge disappointment both in its errors on easily accessed information like the PSAT and its pedestrian treatment of grammar rules.
