5 out of 5 stars Solid, Smooth & Quiet   November 7, 2006

I've had this unit for about 3 months and so far have no regrets. Mine arrived in just under a week from the time I placed the order. There was some damage to the plastic housing around the flywheel during shipping. So, I took a couple digital photos before even unpacking it & sent them to customer service. They responded the same day and sent replacement parts that arrived a couple days later. I use it for 30 minutes a day nearly everyday. Despite earlier reviews warning this may not be a good fit for smaller people, I'm a 5'5" male and find it to be very comfortable. I personally wouldn't want the stride any shorter - however, I am also a runner so that may make some difference. I haven't played around much with the various programs because I'm content to set it to the resistance level I'm comfortable with and go. Sometimes I'll manually change it up or down during a workout depending on how I feel on a given day. My only con: I do occasionally notice a ticking noise, but overall it's extremely quiet, smooth and stable. No problem hearing the TV while using it. I highly recommend this machine. Just be aware of the large size of it and measure out where you plan to put it ahead of time so you know it'll fit!

I've had it about a month, but have only used it 3 or 4 hours. It's quiet now, except for some mild noises once in a while. Sometimes it makes a little tick every revolution which I associate with a developing problem with the connection from the pedal to the flywheel. My prior elliptical and an exercise bike failed for this reason.

I preferred my prior elliptical, a Nordic Track. It had a better stride length, was smaller & lighter, and only cost $600 versus the $2000 for the Smooth Elliptical. However, the Nordic Track did not hold up very well, even though I'm only 150 pounds. I am 6 ft tall and the 19 inch stride length of the Smooth Ellipical causes me to bounce when I go over 6.5 mph. The Nordic Track was very quiet initially, so I am not convinced this Smooth Elliptical will be either quiet or durable.

One problem I have now, is that the pulse rate display is always off by 30 to 60 beats per minute, and the company has not responded to my email.

The machine is big and heavy. I paid movers $50 to take it up one flight of steps, but I should have gotten a neighbor and done it myself.

Ordered the CE 7.4. Moving and setup definitely needs two strong guys and takes time. Shipping box is 29"x29"x72" and weighs 238lbs ....

The CE 7.4 is very solidly made and in my opinion a much better deal than ellipticals from Precor or Life Fitness. I (6'6" tall) enjoy it very much but I can see that small people might have a problem with it. The ride does feel very smooth indeed.

Could it be better? Sure, but then you're also spending $2k instead of $4k ...

regards,
Mike

2 out of 5 stars BEWARE: One size doesn't fit all   April 15, 2006

When our previous (Reebok gym quality) elliptical bit the dust after a move, my husband and I did a ton of research before settling on the Smooth 7.4. I *thought* we asked all the right questions before purchasing.

Here's the real deal: The boxes that it's delivered in are HEAVY--no way a couple can move them. 2 strong men or it's not getting set up. Set up is lengthy but not impossible. Our machine came with a factory-install related squeak in one arm--they sent the wrong replacement TWICE & we're awaiting their 3rd try.

BUT my main complaint and WARNING is that if you are a smaller person (I am 5'3" with US womans size 6 feet), this machine is NOT for you. The footbeds & "the pivoting foot pedals" are a major problem for smaller feet, more often than not acting like a see-saw, throwing balance totally off, and causing heels to land atop the footbed edges during steps and feet to either be too far toe-down or (even worse) too far toe-up with the entire foot at about a 45 degree angle--putting extreme pressure on the ankles. I never had problems like these with our prior elliptical. Becuase of the impossible balancing routine, this one actually causes me ankle & knee pain, totally defeating the purpose of the machine!

My husband--6' tall--likes the machine. (Other than the fact that ours is still not in proper working order.) I am HUGELY dissappointed and do not enjoy the workouts one bit.

5 out of 5 stars Feels just like the elliptical at my health club   March 2, 2006

I purchased the Smooth 7.4 elliptical trainer from the Smooth Fitness web site. It wasn't on sale when I bought it, so I paid $2,499.

I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and I am very impressed. This trainer feels like the ellipticals I used at my gym. It is very quiet and has a real stable and solid feel.
