5 out of 5 stars 3 years old and still considered a great purchase   February 2, 2007

I initially purchased a Velocity spin bike because of its lower price (about $150 less), but after a few weeks of buyer's remorse, it was back to the bike shop to exchange it for the Schwinn IC Elite. This bike offers an amazingly smooth and stable ride, which is well worth the extra money.

I also appreciate its extra features. I've only had to use the emergency brake twice, but both times I was happy to have it. Just check the specs of other indoor cycles, and you'll be amazed at how many do not offer a standard emergency breaking feature. When you're spinning a 25-40 pound fly wheel, you really need the ability to make sudden stops in the event of an emergency.

Having an additional water holder is great, because I always drink at least 2 while riding, and I don't want to have to stop mid-ride to reach for another drink. Many indoor cycles offer only one (if any) and aren't built to accommodate add-on holders.

I ride using the adjustable foot harnesses which are comfortable and sturdy. I haven't used toe clips with this model.

It's a comfortable bike overall, but I do question the 4'11" "compatible user size." I'm 5'3" and could use an additional half inch forward adjustment. However, I've found that I can compensate by using the handlebar's center protrusion when riding in a neutral position. Shorter users should probably give the bike an in-store test run to make sure it won't cause neck, shoulder, arm or back strain.

The specs also state that it's compatible for users up to 6'8". My husband is 6'8" and he is able to ride very comfortably without straining his back or knees.

The saddle is okay on its own, but I prefer using a gel cushion cover for added comfort. The seat width is standard, so it was easy to find a suitable cover.

After 3 years of use, my schwinn has held up perfectly, without needing to be serviced. It's a great product. Highly recommended.

I did my homework and investigated various brands and models of spinners in person. I went with the schwinn ic elite because, at the time of purchase, it was be sold for less money than the model below it, the ic pro. I had originally planned to purchase the ic pro but that made no sense when the better model was cheaper. I wanted a gym quality spinner that i planned to ride regularly and would not need to ever replace. I read many reviews on amazon that talked about the equipment being good starter equipment and if the buyer actually wound up using it, they'd upgrade later. That's not my style. If I'm buing it, I'm using it! The ic pro and the ic elite are both built to last a lifetime. I didn't order from schwinn because i would have incurred an additional charge for delivery and installation, mandatory, plus a hefty new york sales tax. Had i ordered directly from schwinn, who send a nautilus representative with the bike to put it together, the trials and tribulations that followed would probably been avoided. First, amazon sent the wrong bike. They sent the ic pro instead of the ic elite. I had to request a replacement and a pick-up of the incorrect bike. I had to tip the delivery people to help me get the very heavy/sturdy bike back into the box for return shipping. The correct bike came a week or two later. The bike comes mostly assembled and I had no problem putting it together. It really just requires putting on the stability bars and pedals. Unfortunately, when I got on the bike, which is supposed to be gym quality, it provided a terrible ride. The wheel seemed to wobble, it was noisy and there was some sort of grinding going on which made the whole bike vibrate. I requested a serviceman come out an fix it. Customer service people were nice, but somehow the service order didn't make it through to the service department for a few weeks. I finally got a serviceman out and he said that the wheel and it's assembly would have to be replaced. The wheel gets assembled in china and this particular job was faulty. He ordered a new wheel be shipped to me and another ten days went by until the serviceman could return to replace the wheel. We opened the box of the replacement wheel and found that schwinn had sent the wrong wheel! Again they sent the ic pro instead of the elite. New wheel ordered, another couple of weeks to get service. The wheel replacement did the trick and the bike rides like a dream. I am now totally happy with my spinner. Four stars instead of five because it took a couple of months to get happy with my purchase. I purchased the it on April 5. Today is June 16, the red letter day that the bike finally works well. For me the cost savings purchasing through Amazon was worth a couple of months of inconvenience. I might have felt differently if it were winter when I'd rather stay home and ride than go out to the gym.
